My Two Year Anniversary!

Two years ago today, I took a chance and independently published a book called Way Off Plan, the start of my Firsts and Forever series. I went in with fairly low expectations, fully expecting my story to get swallowed up in the giant sea of Amazon, never to be heard from again. But that didn't happen.

Instead, here I am, currently writing the seventh Firsts and Forever book! Every book in the series has found more and more readers, and I'm so proud that all of them have made it into the top three in gay fiction and gay romance on Amazon. In Pieces and Skye Blue both even made it to number one! I cried with happiness when that happened, it was just a dream come true. Two of my books were also Rainbow Award finalists, which was such an honor!

Because of all of you, my wonderful readers, I've been able to turn my love and my passion into the career of my dreams, and I'm so incredibly grateful for your ongoing support! I'm also honored that I can call many of you friends. Since joining Facebook earlier this year, I've gotten to know readers from all around the world, and that has been the most incredible gift!

I was just reading back over the blog post I put up for my one year anniversary, which you can find here. I was so surprised and overwhelmed a year ago at the success I'd had as an indie writer, and you know what? I'm still blown away!

Here's what I published over the last two years:

The Firsts and Forever Series:
Way Off Plan
All In
In Pieces
Gathering Storm
Salvation
Skye Blue

The Paranormal Side of Things:
Feral
The Tinder Chronicles
     Tinder
     Hunted
     Destined

Up next is Against the Wall, the seventh book in my Firsts and Forever series, which will be available in early 2015.

It's been a wild ride and I can't wait to see what happens next! I feel so grateful and so blessed. Thank you for being a part of my journey!

Giveaway!

I'm hosting a holiday giveaway on my Facebook page this weekend. If you don't already follow me on Facebook, you might want to so you can join in the fun! You can find me here.

You can play along by leaving a comment on the original post on Facebook, or for non-Facebook users, you can email me at AlexaLandWrites at gmail dot com before 11 a.m. PST on 11/30/14 and be entered into the drawing.

Here's the original post:

It’s time for a giveaway! How about some free ebooks? I know many of you have loooooong wish lists, and this holiday season your book budget might be a bit tight. So for TEN lucky winners, your next ebook is on me! The only catch? I want to give you a book written by another author, not me. Why? Because I’m so thankful to be a part of this wonderful community and I want to spread the love to some of my fellow authors!

The contest will run for 48 hours. It begins right now and will close at 11 a.m. PST Sunday 11/30/14. To enter, just leave a comment on this post, telling me the title and author of the ebook you’d like to win (up to $10 USD). Tag the author if you can, so other readers can check them out. When the contest closes, the winners will be selected by random drawing.

In case you can’t think of anything to ask for off the top of your head, here are a few suggestions. These are all wonderful books written by some of the sweetest people I’ve had the pleasure to get to know:

Rescued by Felice Stevens

Full Disclosure by Kindle Alexander

Bowl Full of Cherries by Raine O'Tierney

Even if you don’t win, you might want to check out those books. Just saying. :) So what would you like to win? Let me know, and good luck!

Reader Appreciation Contest, Part One!

Welcome to the start of Alexa’s Reader Appreciation Week! For helping Skye Blue get to the number one spot in gay fiction, romance, and erotica on Amazon, we’re going to celebrate!! Here’s the first of several giveaways I’ll be doing this week. In this one, I’m going to make you work for it, but just a little. ;)

It’s no secret that I’m a bigtime Sci Fi movie geek. In fact, as all my readers know, my books are sprinkled with references to science fiction and fantasy movies. Let’s see if you’ve been paying attention! :D To enter the contest, send me an email at AlexaLandWrites@gmail.com (and no, I'm not going to spam you, I don't even keep a mailing list) naming as many of my nerdy movie references as you can think of and telling me briefly who said it or what the context was. For every movie you name accurately, you get one entry in the contest! If you think of more movies later, you can email me again and I’ll add more entries for you!

This contest is running simultaneously on my Facebook page and you can also enter by sending me your answers in a private message on Facebook. This is just the first of several giveaways this week and it only runs for 48 hours, so you’ll need to get your emails to me by noon Monday, 8/11/14, Pacific Standard Time.

I know, I’m making you work for it! But I have confidence in my readers, I know you’ve been paying attention! There are TONS of these references in all my books. And by the way, you can draw from more than just my Firsts and Forever series! For those of you that have read my paranormal books, Feral, which is a stand-alone, and the two novellas in the Tinder Chronicles, you can use those too!

Remember, your name goes in the drawing for each individual reference you can come up with! And what do you get for this effort? I’m giving away TWO $75 Amazon gift cards!! One will go to whoever I draw out of all the entries I receive. The second will go to the name I draw from the top ten participants that send me the most references!! So, GOOD LUCK! Ready? GO!!

Rainbow Con 2015 - More Than Just Fiction

Hello, and welcome to Alexa Land's blog, which has temporarily been taken over by the folks of RainbowCon. If you haven't heard of us, the Rainbow Conference (aka RainbowCon) is a four-day conference taking place in Tampa, Florida July 16th through 19th next year. Four days of nothing but GLBTQ content geared toward bringing people together over artistic diversity. The first RainbowCon took place just this last April, and we're thrilled about putting on our second con.   The one big difference for the 2015 event is that we've expanded our programming. RainbowCon's first event took a relatively narrow approach, focusing entirely on the wonderful diversity of GLBTQ fiction, from sweet and adventurous YA books to stories on the fringes of the more adult-oriented genres. We had panels spanning the vastness of fiction to take on light and serious topics alike, but there were also workshops for aspiring or established writers and a couple fun events in the evenings. For our 2015 event, fiction is just the tip of the iceburg!
If you take a look at our schedule online, one of the first things you'll likely notice is that the topics vary widely. Here are a few sneak peeks!
  • Fiction – Yes, it's true, we still have many panels devoted to fiction. From craft and industry panels to tropes, taboos, genre crossing, and handling criticism. In addition to the wide variety of panels (a couple of which will be making a second appearance from our first con), we have an entire room devoted to workshops throughout the extended weekend. Everything from taking the step from hobby to career to worldbuilding, action, dialogue, or writing awesome bad guys. If you want to add to your skill set as a writer, you're likely to find a workshop right up your alley.
  • Fandom – Because of the lower representation of QUILTBAG characters in various media, fandom is often where fans of television shows, movies, and/or fiction can find a bit more representation of our diverse community. Whether it's reading Between the Lines of Sherlock or Queering Middle-Earth with fellow Tolkien fans, there are plenty of opportunities to commiserate with other fans at RainbowCon. Sometimes, it's not just what was in the original media so much as the ripples it made in the community of fans that makes a character or plot so beloved.
  • Comics – This medium has an amazing impact due to the tantalizing combination of both storytelling and visual elements. Our Guests of Honor for 2015 are Alex Woolfson and Adam DeKraker, the creator and illustrator of The Young Protectors, an online comic surrounding GLBTQ themes and superheroes. The pair will share their knowledge in a few panels, and we have others celebrating the various comics that support the visibility of GLBTQ content online!
  • Television – From Star Trek to Xena: Warrior Princess to Queer as Folk, there's no doubt that television has had an incredible impact on the QUILTBAG community, both in terms of visibility and the perpetuating (and sometimes dismantling) of stereotypes. We have a broad spattering of panels that will take a look at the lasting effects of certain television genres as well as specific shows, both past and present.
  • Movies – Come on. Do we really have to tell you that we're also covering movies? While not all the panels single out individual titles, we'll hit upon topics such as Why Does the Gay Dude Die First?, the Appeal of the Fairy Tale Retelling, and even a lighthearted discussion of GLBT Movies That Sucked (And Some That Didn't). A little bit of everything!
  • Other Media – Other arts can certainly play a role in the QUILTBAG community, and RainbowCon wants to celebrate them as well! GLBTQ content on stage (theatre) and in music can completely captivate us. In addition to that, pop culture provides many instances of actors, musicians, and activists becoming icons, some outspoken and others whose lives in the past are still beloved. Whether you're a fan of Angels in America or know every lyric to RENT's “La Vie Boheme”, you'll have a place here!
  • Education – We're thrilled to also feature an entire track of panels and workshops aimed at educating con-goers on various topics, from dispelling bisexual myths and understanding genderqueer identity, to coming out and bullying, to queerbaiting and even getting kids reading. There are plenty of opportunities to learn a little something new or share your knowledge with others eager to know more. This part of the programming allows the con not only to be fun but to also make a potential impact.
And, if you can believe it, that's still just a peek! We have activities for those who want to get crafty at the con, we have GLBTQ games available, and even a field trip out to our official charity, the Tampa Bay Big Cat Rescue. We know it's a lot of content, but we hope that everyone will find something to enjoy at the con. The very best thing about coming down to a con like ours is that, whether you identify within the QUILTBAG spectrum or just enjoy queer content in various media, you'll be coming to a safe space where you can express yourself, network, and make new friends. These are your people, this your community, and when we all come together, it really can be a once in a lifetime experience.

By the way, I mentioned a cocktail contest in my last post, and the winning recipe was posted on my Facebook page. It's also included at the very end of Skye Blue, along with a fun little bonus scene with Skye and Nana.

Counting the days until August 1st! :)

Cocktail Contest!

I recently posted a couple sneak previews of my next book, Skye Blue, for my facebook followers. In one of them, I introduced a currently fictitious cocktail. Let's just call it the BFC. I would tell you what that stands for, but my blog is all-ages, so I can't go there. ;)

I'm hosting a cocktail contest on my facebook page from now through Friday, June 20th. Let's invent the BFC! The only requirement is that the drink is pink, pinker the better! Come post your best BFC recipe to my wall for a chance to win a super fun BFC prize package!

If you're not already one of my facebook friends, you should join the fun! :) The link is in the upper right corner of this blog.

Every Vote Counts!

Hi all! As I mentioned in a previous post, I'm up for June Author of the Month in the M/M Romance Group on Goodreads! This is a huge deal for an indie author like me, since that group has over 14,000 members. It could bring in lots of new readers, and that in turn could help me continue to bring you the books you enjoy!

If you're on Goodreads, I'd sure appreciate it if you took a minute to vote. Right now, only half a dozen votes separate first and second place, so every single vote makes a difference!

You can vote by following this link if you're signed on to Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/poll/show/102914-which-of-these-authors-would-you-like-chosen-as-one-of-our-june-author-o

Voting is open through May 25th. Thank you so much for your help! <3

Super Fun Interview!

I had a blast being interviewed by author and all-around awesome person Raine O'Tierney over at her blog, The Hat Party. Yes, as the name implies, I had to wear a hat, so I donned my super flattering Jayne Cobb beanie from the TV show Firefly and wore it with geek pride. The questions covered a wide range of subjects, including zombies and dachshunds -- too much fun! You can check it out here.

Full-Immersion Social Media!

Thank you to everyone that found me and friended me on my brand new facebook page this weekend! It's been wonderful getting to meet and chat with so many of you!

Thanks to a plug from brilliant author and all-around awesome person Kindle Alexander, along with those of you that tracked me down on your own, I already have over 150 followers. That's made me so happy! I've really been feeling the love over there this weekend!

Come join me! That's going to be the best source for getting up-to-date information on my upcoming books. I'll be posting contests and giveaways there as well, so don't miss the fun!

I figured while I was embracing the world of social media, I'd join Twitter, too. I can be found @AlexaLandWrites. I seriously have no idea what I'm doing, but damn, it's fun!

I've never really had a clue how to promote my work, and frankly, it's been sheer dumb luck that anyone ever even found my books in the first place! But I figured it was time to get out of my comfort zone and take some chances. That way, I can keep doing my dream job and bringing you new books! :D

waiting and watching!

I'm on pins and needles as I wait for Salvation to go live on Amazon! I sent it in last night, and it always takes them several hours to review new books and make them available. I know it'll go live at some point today, I just don't know when. As soon as it does, I'll come right back here and post a link, since new books are hard to find on their site at first.

Thank you to my readers that have taken the time to let me know you're excited for this book. I'm excited to bring it to you!! :)

On to Editing!

Hi all! I finished writing Salvation this week, and now have moved on to the editing phase. I can hardly wait to bring you the next book in my Firsts and Forever series! It should just be a couple more weeks now, as I polish it up and make it the best it can be for you. I'll keep you posted here when I pinpoint a release date -- and that just may be happening in April!! :)

Speaking of Weddings...

I just finished writing Christopher and Kieran's wedding, which occurs during my upcoming book, Salvation. I'm the type of person who cries at weddings, and ones I write are apparently no exception! It was just really emotional to write the culmination of that relationship, and I'm looking forward to bringing it to my readers!

I also used the wedding as a way to revisit all the couples from my Firsts and Forever series. You'll get to find out what's going on with Jamie and Dmitri, Charlie and Dante, Hunter and Brian, and of course our soon-to-be newlyweds, Christopher and Kieran. So many of you have taken these characters to heart, and I hope you enjoy this glimpse into what their lives are like past their happily ever after!

On top of that, you'll also be meeting several new characters that will continue to move this series forward, including exuberant Skye and troubled Christian. And of course, first and foremost this book will bring you Trevor's story. He's been a joy to write. He's shy and a bit unsure of his place in the world, which I think a lot of us struggle with at some point. I love the way he's come to life and earned his place in the Firsts and Forever family.

So when's Salvation coming out? Well, I'm shooting for a May release, and right now I'm on track for that. I still have the last section of the book to write, and then of course there's the editing process, but May is looking good at this point! I'll keep you up to date here on my blog as I continue moving toward that goal.

xxoo,
Alexa

From a reader...

Sometimes my readers send me emails that really touch my heart. That happened today.

I got a message from twenty-four-year-old Joe, who's marrying his true love Jonathan this summer. Here's what he had to say about their relationship:

"...I'm getting married to my fiance Jonathan in August. We've been together for 2 years now. We used to work together 5 years ago... (we couldn't stand each other then) and somehow reconnected. It's our own amazing crazy love story. Now we're getting married!"

How cute is that?! Here's the part that made me tear up, that's how much it meant to me:

"When I do my vows there's one thing I want to put in them that means the world to me and is something I always felt towards him but never could put into words. I hope it's okay that I use a line from your book:

I missed nothing, and I know that for a fact because I have absolutely everything right here. You astonish me, you fulfill me and care for me, you make me feel so incredibly loved and I'll spend every day of the rest of my life trying to make you as happy as you make me."*

I'm absolutely honored and humbled that he'd want to include something I wrote in his vows as he weds the love of his life!

Thank you, Joe, for paying me the highest compliment imaginable. I wish you and Jonathan a lifetime of happiness!

Checking In

Hi all! It's been a while since I updated my blog, so I thought I'd check in. I've been busy writing Salvation, Trevor's story, which is the fifth book in the Firsts and Forever series, and it's right on track for release this spring. I'm shooting for a May release, and I've been really pleased with the way it's coming together.

At the same time, I've been mapping out the next two books that will follow Salvation. People have asked me how many books I plan to write in the Firsts and Forever series, and there's no set answer. As long as these books remain popular and people keep asking for more, I'll keep them coming!

Alright, I'd better get back to it! Right now in the scene I'm writing, Trevor and his love interest are just about to...take it to the next level. That's all I'm saying! ;)

Cover reveal, and thanks!

Thank you to all my readers for your support -- you've made Gathering Storm a success! An extra thank you goes to those of you that have taken the time to leave great reviews on Amazon, and that have emailed to tell me you enjoyed Hunter's story. Feedback like that means the world to me!

Because so many of you have expressed an interest in the next book in the Firsts and Forever series, I decided to go ahead and post an early cover reveal. Trevor's story is called Salvation, and it will be available this spring.

Much love,

Now on Smashwords!

At the request of some of my readers, I finally made my books available on an alternate platform. In addition to finding my new book, Gathering Storm, on Amazon, you can now also find it on Smashwords, along with the rest of the Firsts and Forever series.
